Lady Falcons close out conference slate on positive note

Forbush’s Skylar Southern tangles with West Wilkes’ Mary McNeill for possession.

MILLERS CREEK — Forbush concluded the Foothills 2A Conference portion of its girl’s soccer schedule with a 4-1 win over West Wilkes last Wednesday evening at Window World Field.

Coupled with their 5-1 win against North Surry last Monday, the Lady Falcons locked up no worse than second place in the league with a 10-2 mark.

Wilkes Central, whom defeated Forbush late last week, leads them by two games with two conference matches to play.

Skylar Southard had a big match, which included the match’s first goal in the opening 20 minutes. The senior also added a pair of assists.

Southard set up the Lady Falcons’ second score when she sent a nice through ball to senior Sarah Owens in the 31st minute.

Before Owens’ goal, the Lady Blackhawks (9-6-1, 6-5) recorded the equalizer in the 21st minute as Elizabeth Robertson found the back of the net. The freshman scored off an assist from Emma Golds.

Forbush (12-5) had an opportunity to widen its advantage prior to Owens’ score when West Wilkes was called for a handball in the 18-yard box.

But the Lady Falcons’ penalty kick sailed over the cross bar.

Owens nearly added a second goal in the 35th minute, but her attempt missed the mark. However, Emma Cheek was right in front of the goal to clean up the miss and gave Forbush a 3-1 halftime advantage.

The Lady Flacons, who held a 29-25 shots advantage, had two opportunities to push the margin further in the first 90 seconds of the second half.

Morgan Wood — West Wilkes’ goalkeeper — stoned both attempts as the junior finished with 16 stops.

Five minutes later, Southard charged down the pitch and found Cheek on the cross as she put the shot past Wood.

Zayley St. John was solid in goal for the Lady Falcons with 16 stops.

In addition to Southard and Owens, Samantha Post recorded an assist in Wednesday’s match.

Two days earlier, five different Forbush players found the back of the net in the victory against the Lady Greyhounds.

Cheek and Southard both scored, as did Myers, Post and Lindlea Huttar’ Southard (two), Myers and Post recorded assists.

While the Lady Blackhawks still have one league match left (at Wilkes Central on Thursday), Forbush closed out the regular season on Tuesday night against Lake Norman.
