The uptake of blockchain technology in the media has been slow, with less than 10 per cent of publishers making it part of their strategy. However, a recent report by INMA shows how blockchain could help publishers and how they could begin experimenting with the “potentially industry-changing technology.”
It could help combat disinformation, according to the latest What’s New In Publishing article by Faisal Kalim, with the New York Times and BBC among others looking into how they can use blockchain to secure image sourcing information.
The article also discusses how using blockchain could present new monetisation options, including through NFTs. But journalists are still reluctant to explore the technology.
“[Blockchain] kind of reminds me of the Web 2.0 era and the social networking technologies, where people at the top of publishing are like ‘Why would I want to tweet what I had for lunch?’,” the article reads.
